Transfer Credit Review & Appeals Process FAQ’s

Q:  Why is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences a part of this evaluation?

KU’s General Education requirements are housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). General Education transfer equivalencies will be reviewed by the Committee on Undergraduate Studies and Advising (CUSA) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Contact CLAS Student Academic Services, Strong 109, to determine the status of your degree requirements.  CLAS advisors will assist you with further evaluation.

Once completed, any appeals will be directed to a Transfer and Articulation Review Committee appointed by the provost.  Contact Lee Furbeck, Sr. Associate Director in the Office of Admissions, by email at transfercredit@ku.edu or by phone at (785) 864-3911 to submit an appeal.

Q:  Is information regarding transfer credit available before I make my final decision regarding KU?

Yes, hundreds of transfer courses have been evaluated by KU!  This information is available to you online through KU Credtran.  You may confirm course-to-course equivalency and basic degree requirements in this system at:  http://admissions.ku.edu/credit/transfer/

Transfer students with completed Associate’s degrees, admitted into the College, and attending New Student Orientation will meet with CLAS academic advisors to confirm general education requirement completion prior to initial enrollment.

Q:  How do I know if my credit has been officially received and evaluated for KU course equivalency?

Individual student transcript data is processed by a Transfer Credit Coordinator in the Office of Admissions.  All courses appearing on your official transcripts submitted to the Office of Admissions are entered onto your record and evaluated for credit.  Once your courses have been evaluated, this information will appear on your academic record (ARTS form) and in your Kyou portal under the “Course” tab.  You may confirm course-to-course equivalency in this system at:  http://admissions.ku.edu/credit/transfer/

Q:  Why didn’t my course(s) from another institution transfer to KU?”

If transfer work is not appearing on the ARTS form, first verify that you have sent an official copy of all transcripts to Admissions. If transcripts have been sent but the work is not appearing, you may contact a transfer credit coordinator in Office of Admissions, (864-5136).

Remember that not all courses will transfer, even as elective credit. These courses will be recorded, but coded as “NTRN”.  Work taken as part of a technical or vocational program does not automatically transfer. Computer science courses must contain programming or have college algebra as a prerequisite to transfer. Computer application courses do not transfer.

Q: If a course from another institution won’t fulfill a specific requirement, did I take it for nothing?

No.  It will still count as elective hours.  Remember that all degrees require some elective hours; they are necessary to complete the minimum number of hours required for graduation.

Q:  I don’t understand the number of hours of credit that is recorded on my transcript.

Course credit hours can be confusing when making transfer calculations.   Credit hours earned from institutions on the “quarter” system do NOT transfer as “semester” hours, e.g., 4 quarter hours = 2.7 semester hours.  This may explain why the cumulative hours indicated by your transfer institution transcript is different than hours on your KU academic record.

Q:  Can the general education requirements that I completed as part of an Associate’s (AA, AS, AGS) degree from a Kansas community or Kansas junior college satisfy the general education requirements in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS)?

Yes, in compliance with the Kansas Board of Regent’s Transfer and Articulation policy (http://www.registrar.ku.edu/pdf/BOR_articulation.pdf) CLAS Core Skills and Principal Course requirements may be considered satisfied:

Step 1:  Be sure that official documentation of your completed Associate’s degree has been recorded by the KU Office of Admissions.

Step 2:  Determine if CLAS general education requirements beyond those satisfied through course-to-course equivalency have been met.  CLAS Student Academic Services advisors will evaluate further general education requirement completion in the following KBOR Core Skills and Breadth Requirements:

12 hours of Basic Skills courses, including:

    • 6 hours of English Composition
    • 3 hours of Public Speaking or Speech Communication
    • 3 hours of college level Mathematics;

12 hours of Humanities courses from at least three of the following disciplines:

    • Art*
    • Theater*
    • Philosophy
    • Music*
    • History
    • Literature

    *Performance courses are excluded.

9 hours of Social and Behavioral Science courses from at least three of the following disciplines:

    • Sociology
    • Psychology
    • Political Science
    • Economics
    • Geography
    • Anthropology

9 hours of Natural and Physical Science courses from at least two disciplines (lecture with lab).

If all coursework outlined in the KBOR Core Skills and Breadth Requirements (above) has been completed with a grade of “C-” or better, CLAS BA and BGS English, First-level Mathematics, Argument & Reason, and Principal Course requirements will be considered satisfied/completed.

If your ARTS form/Degree Progress Report (DPR) does not indicate that these requirements have been satisfied/completed accurately, please contact CLAS Student Academic Services in Strong 109.

Q:  Will my Associate’s degree satisfy requirements that are specific to my intended bachelor’s degree (BA, BGS, BFA, BS, BVA) or major?

While the completion of an Associate’s degree does not satisfy degree and/or major specific requirements, all transfer course work will be evaluated and, if equivalent, applied to requirements.

The following CLAS Bachelor’s Degree specific requirements must be fulfilled:

    • 3 hours of a 2nd Mathematics: mathematics course with college algebra as required prerequisite,
    • 3 hours of Non-western Culture: course with 75% non-western culture content,
    • 6 hours of Western Civilization: course-to-course equivalency with KU HWC 204 and 205, and
    • World Language Proficiency (up to 16 hours, BA only): course equivalency or placement exam.
    • Supporting science requirements (for BS degrees)

All CLAS major/minor requirements and specified prerequisites must be fulfilled.

Q:  If I am unsatisfied, or believe there are errors, with the evaluation of my transfer credit, what are my next steps?

    • Individual course-to-course equivalency will be determined by faculty committees in the relevant departments.  Please contact the Office of Admissions for clarification and requests for new course evaluation. The Office of Admissions will coordinate the review of individual courses with the appropriate academic unit.  Once the academic unit has reviewed the petition, you will be notified and, if necessary, your transcript evaluation will be updated.

Appeals regarding a departmental decision of course equivalency will be directed to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Committee on Undergraduate Studies and Advising (CUSA).  Contact Lee Furbeck, Sr. Associate Director in the Office of Admissions, by email at transfercredit@ku.edu or by phone at (785) 864-3911 to submit an appeal.

    • Transfer issues related to CLAS Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) undergraduate degree requirements will be reviewed by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Committee on Undergraduate Studies and Advising (CUSA).   Contact CLAS Student Academic Services, Strong 109, if you believe that the status of your degree requirements need further review based on transfer credit.  CLAS advisors will assist you with further evaluation.
