The first three goals speak to acquiring the foundation of a liberal education
within the context of a large, comprehensive research university. They define
the personal skills and mental habits that an individual should take away
from such an institution.
The last three goals speak to the moral development of the individual as
she or he passes from the university into a broader global community. They
specify the knowledge and attitudes--even the wisdom--needed to navigate over
a lifetime within that world.
