Fall & Summer 2008 Main Enrollment

Main Enrollment Advising Appointment Dates: March 24-April 21, 2008

Set up your advising appointment BEFORE
you leave for spring break (March 17-March 23)

Fall/Summer 2008 enrollment is available online and accessible through Kyou. This system provides you with the ability to manage personal information such as addresses, enrollment, and payment of tuition and fees.

Seeking Enrollment Information:
Look up enrollment information via Kyou. Read all emails from KU departments as they will contain pertinent advising and enrollment information. Reading this information will certainly simplify your enrollment process. You should make your advising appointment prior to leaving on Spring Break.

Seeking Advising:
There have been a few changes in the main enrollment and advising process this semester. In hopes to better serve students and provide improved advising services, advising roles are shared between the University Advising Center (formerly Freshmen-Sophomore Advising Center), Student Academic Services, and all major departments within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Students who are:

Will be advised by:

First and Second term at KU, non-transfer student University Advising Center
126 Strong Hall
Non-declared students < 90 hours University Advising Center
126 Strong Hall
Non-declared Transfer Student, first term University Advising Center
126 Strong Hall
Non-declared students > 90 hours Student Academics Services
109 Strong Hall
All declared students Major Department

Holds: If you have an enrollment/advising hold, you will want to be sure to take care of that before your enrollment date. This is visible through the Kyou portal.

  • FAH Advising Enrollment Hold: All incoming college students will receive this hold, and be referred to meet with an advisor. This hold is designed to welcome students to KU, and ensure all college students are aware of the vast services KU has to offer, as well as how to utilize resources such as the ARTS form. Another benefit of seeing the UAC during the first year at KU is to learn more about the various University and College policies that may impact you during your academic career.
  • Non-declared (NDC) Advising Enrollment Hold: All students are required to participate in advising sessions each term until they declare a major and develop a graduation plan. This is true for any continuing student who has not officially declared a major or been accepted into another professional school at KU.
    • If you are prepared to declare your major simply meet with an advisor in your major department, complete the Major Declaration Form, and return the white copy of the form to the CLAS SAS office (in 109 Strong) for processing. Within 48 hours, the NDC hold will be removed from your records.
    • If you cannot yet declare your major, you will need to meet with an advisor in your desired major department. Upon receiving advising, you will be required to complete a Not Eligible for Admission to Desired Program form. Return the form to the CLAS SAS office (in 109 Strong) for processing. Within 48 hours, the NDC hold will be removed from your records.
    • If you intend to apply to a KU professional school but are not yet eligible, you will need to meet with an advisor in that school. Upon receiving advising, you will be required to complete a Not Eligible for Admission to Desired Program form. You will be directed to bring that form to either the CLAS SAS or UAC office in order to remove the enrollment hold.

  • PRB Probation Hold: All students with a KU GPA under 2.0 will receive this hold. You will be directed to the CLAS SAS office for further assistance. You will be required to sign a contract after reviewing the terms of your probation, and may also be required to meet with an advisor. Once that contract has been signed, your PRB hold will be removed. Please note:
    • Students with less than 60 hours will be required to earn a 2.0 each semester until their KU GPA reaches a 2.0
    • Students with more than 60 hours will be required to earn a 2.5 each semester until their KU GPA reaches a 2.0

Interest Codes vs. Declaring your Major: When most students arrive at KU, they choose to voice interest in a particular major (a major interest code.) This is different than declaring a major. For you to declare a major, you must meet with an advisor in your intended major department, and complete a Major Declaration Form. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences encourages students to update their degree and major data so that they are provided with the most up to date advising information possible. Important information is sent to you based on your major codes. If you have decided on a major or majors, please be sure to complete a Major Declaration Form with a departmental advisor.

  • NOTE: You may have an interest code appear on your ARTS form without having formally declared your major. Your ARTS form will say “declared” if you have formally declared your major.

KU expects students to declare a major by the end of their sophomore year (or by 60 hours). Students postponing this decision are commonly forced to extend their time to graduation. Enrollment holds are placed on your record based on your interest/major code. If there are any interest/major codes listed on your ARTS form that are no longer correct, please come to the CLAS SAS (109 Strong) office or the UAC (126 Strong) to request that they be removed.

How to Prepare for Advising:

  • Review the requirements for your degree program in the Undergraduate Catalog or your major's check sheet.
  • Students being advised in the University Advising Center should prepare for your advising appointment by completing the Advising Tutorial.
  • Students being advised by an advisor in an academic department or the CLA&S SAS office should prepare for your advising appointment by completing the Faculty Advising Preparation sheet.
  • Check the online Timetable for course offerings and information about deadlines, locations, fee payment, etc.
  • Make a tentative list of courses for Spring. Include at least two alternate selections.
  • Bring your ARTS form and tentative schedule to your advising appointment. Students may be required to meet with an advisor. Once you have done so, your enrollment hold will be released.
  • Be aware that some courses require specific majors or pre-codes to be in the system (i.e., on your ARTS form) in order to enroll. You can find this by checking the course note in Enroll and Pay.
  • Clear any other holds (parking, library fines, etc.) you may have listed through Enroll and Pay system.
  • Enroll online at Kyou on your designated day.
NOTE: If you have changed your major, you may go to the new department to schedule an advising appointment. Check out the specific departmental advising information
